Doors Open 2012

On behalf of York County Bowmen, I would like to thank all those volunteers who came out and worked their butts off at last Saturday’s Doors Open event….especially those who stuck it out through the mostly grey, miserable, and rather cool weather right to the very end!

It was a very l-o-n-g day, and it threatened to rain on us at any moment...not the ideal conditions for an outdoor event! But our volunteers were committed to their duties and didn't let anything put them off welcoming the visitors with big smiles and cheerful chat!

We had a truly awesome archery equipment display, thanks to Bill Frey and John Marsden, who very kindly brought along their vast and varied collection of old and new archery related “stuff”. They kept visitors fully entertained with their fascinating stories and detailed knowledge about the history of archery. Many visitors had a hard time tearing themselves away to move on to the next station!

All in all, our 2nd Doors Open event was a HUGE success. We received a lot of very positive feedback, both from the visitors and the Doors Open representatives (who stopped by for a visit -- they said how impressed they were with the way we’d organized things, and that they really enjoyed our event!)

None of this could have happened without the help and participation of our many dedicated and MOST AWESOME volunteers, who did an absolutely spectacular job to make this event such a great success. Thank you so much to the following members for all your wonderful efforts and for giving up your time to help us out:

For greeting visitors at the front gate, taking surveys and handing out “passports”:
-    Alice Tse

For greeting visitors at the clubhouse entrance and summarizing the club’s facilities:
-    Karen Atkinson & Janet Moen

For talking to visitors about the club’s history and the photos in the clubhouse:
-    Li-Wei Ho, Graham Neal & Jack Dawe

For sharing their wonderful collection of archery equipment and telling visitors about the many different and interesting items they had on display:
-    Bill Frey & John Marsden

For demonstrating a compound bow at the FITA range and giving detailed presentations about target archery and the equipment used:
-    Kevin Head

For demonstrating Olympic recurve bows at the FITA range
-    Janice and John Wong, & Caitlin Campbell

For demonstrating 3D archery at our makeshift mini 3D course:
-    Don and Slava Panko, Robin, Elizabeth and Katie Horlock & Rick Brown

For teaching visitors how to safely shoot a bow and arrow at a 10-yard target:
-    Mike Peer, Matt Deering & Eric Fok
This was by far our most popular station -- our very patient coaches did a fantastic job in keeping everyone safe and making it a lot of fun for the many visitors that lined up to shoot a bow… from the young toddlers right up to the parents and grandparents!

For taking photos and capturing the event on film:
-    Mark Cote & Chris Atkinson

For running around like crazy and generally helping out wherever needed:
-    Mike Hill & Giovanni Salvia

Thanks also to the YCB Board for providing lunch for our hungry volunteers…pizza has never tasted so good!

And last, but definitely not least, I’d personally like to thank Harry Godau and Kevin Head for all their many hours of hard work to help me plan and prepare for this huge event, as well as for their help on the day. You both did so much to help me pull this off, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

York County Bowmen has once again proved what a truly incredible archery club we are -- and that we have the BEST members in the world! We did ourselves very proud with this event and I’m honoured to have been a part of it. Thank you all once again.
