This season is particularly high for Ticks throughout the province and specifically YCB
property. A tick submitted for testing, tested positive for Lyme disease which reinforces
the need to be vigilant and informed.
Everyone enjoying our property should be aware of appropriate preventative measures
and ensure they make every effort to adhere to them.
Personal Protection (What to Wear &; Apply)
Cover up: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Tuck
your shirt into your pants and your pant legs into your socks.
Light colors: Choose light-colored clothing so ticks are much easier to spot and
brush off.
Insect repellent: Use on-skin insect repellents containing DEET or Icaridin.
Permethrin: Treat your outdoor gear and clothing (but not your skin) with 0.5%
permethrin. It binds to fabric and kills ticks on contact.
Outdoor Behavior
Stick to the center: Walk in the middle of cleared paths or marked trails.
Avoid hot zones: Steer clear of high brush, leaf litter, and tall grass where ticks
typically wait for a host.
Watch your pets: Keep dogs and cats out of the deep brush and regularly
inspect and treat them with veterinarian-approved tick medications.
Post-Outdoor Routine (Check & Clean)
Tick checks: Do a full-body check on yourself, children, and pets. Pay special
attention to hidden areas: the groin, armpits, belly button, scalp, and behind the
knees and ears.
Showers: Take a shower within two hours of coming indoors to wash away any
unattached ticks.
Dry your clothes: Put your outdoor clothes in the dryer on high heat for at least
10 minutes. Ticks can survive a standard wash cycle, but a hot dryer will kill
them.
What to do if you find a tick
If a tick is attached to you, grasp it with clean, fine-pointed tweezers as close to your
skin as possible and pull straight up. Do not twist or squeeze the tick’s body. Clean
the bite area with soap and water. Monitor the area for the next few weeks for signs of a
rash or flu-like symptoms and consult a healthcare provider if they appear.
